Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th January 2024

To facilitate the development of our local talent and to encourage greater participation among the national team, we are proposing the establishment of an annual sport karate development camp. The idea is to bring facilitators with experience and success on the international stage to impart their knowledge to our local athletes and coaches. For the first edition, we are proposing a two-day training camp with two world-class athletes:

• Thomas Scott, the -75kg fighter from USA has won numerous gold medals at the Pan American level and in the Karate 1 Premier League Circuit. He has also won a bronze medal at the WKF World Senior Championships and was one of the athletes to compete at karate’s debut in the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games.

• Cleiver Casanova from Venezuela has won over 32 combined medals in the Pan American region for individual kata. He is also the reigning kata champion of the Bolivarian Games, Sudamerican Games, Alba Games and Central America and Caribbean Games.

Both athletes are due to compete at the upcoming Pan American Games, which will be held in October 2023 in Santigo, Chile. They have a wealth of experience and knowledge and have both expressed a willingness to participate in (what will hopefully be) the first of many training camps.
The second objective of this initiative will be to raise the image of local sport karate among the wider national karate community and corporate Trinidad and Tobago. To that end, in addition to the training seminar, there will also be a series of interactive display booths featuring many of the sports science’s associated with high performance training. These will include strength and conditioning, nutrition, physiotherapy, sports psychology, massage therapy and recovery.
